There seems to be a few misconceptions out there by those just starting out as a 501c3:
MYTH #1: 501c3 status = grants.
WRONG! If you think all you need to get grant money is your nonprofit status, then someone has been pulling your leg. Nonprofits need to explore a whole lot more than just grants to make their fundraising efforts pay off.
MYTH #2: grants are hands-off, transactional, and can be outsourced, and the nonprofit can just turn their attentions to other matters.
WRONG! Grants, just like individual giving, are relational. Foundations don’t give to people, PEOPLE give to people! You can’t hire a consultant to make your friends for you – you have to build and maintain your relationships yourself!
MYTH #3: grant consultants can work for a cut of the grant award.
WRONG! And if someone promises this to you, run the
other way. That person is not following best practices and their ethics are
questionable at best.
I have tried different angles, different paths to address
these myths over the past decade-plus that I’ve been teaching, training,
coaching, and presenting on all things grants, and these intrinsic issues seem
to persist. Now I am on a mission: to give those new to grant seeking a real
foundation in the reality of what it takes to write a successful grant
proposal. I am helping people Unlock Grants!
I’m sharing all I’ve learned about grant
seeking through the years with the individual new to grant seeking, and
starting Unlock-Grants.com, an online course for the beginning grant pro! With
a mission to Unlock the mysteries, myths, and misconceptions of grants for the
novice, I will take learners from newbie and neophyte to cool and confident in
their proposal writing.
Tons of recorded content, plus a host of course extras, as
well as WEEKLY GROUP CALLS FOR ONE YEAR, will support learners through their
journey. I am that serious about my mission and reinforcing the Unlock-Grants
lesson material!
Unlock-Grants will be an online, self-paced course that will take learners through:
- proposal writing, the most common application questions, and how to respond for greatest impact and reward
- step-by-step funder prospect research and funder alignment,
- how to build a program budget and a Logic Model,
- time-saving and organizing tips and tools,
- working with and becoming a consultant –

AND MUCH MORE!
I am THRILLED to report that none other than FOUNDATION
DIRECTORY ONLINE (FDO) is supporting this endeavor with 90 days of FDO Pro for
FREE for the first 100 to register!
I launch Unlock-Grants November 1, and I am working hard to
put together a robust course. Tell your colleagues! Tell your team! Tell your
supervisor!
[Consultants: tell your non-grant ready callers! A
Grant Readiness Assessment scores their readiness to take the course, and if
they’re not ready, I offer FREE alternatives. For those who can’t afford the
course, I offer alternatives to pay for it (like capacity building grants).]
I am very excited to begin this journey with you. Thanks for
your support of my business in all its forms through the years. I’m thrilled
for this next chapter!
Here's a preview of what's to come, and an offer to help you jumpstart your grant writing career!
